Permanent Representative of Ethiopia to the United Nations Tekeda Alemu, who is holding the post of President of the UN Security Council for the month of September, called for all UN Member States to "fully, comprehensively and immediately" implement the UN Security Council's resolution 2375, which includes the strongest sanctions ever imposed on North Korea.
Alemu was speaking at a stakeout at the UN's headquarters in New York City, on Friday. An emergency meeting had been called after North Korea launched an intermediate-range weapon early on Friday from Sunan, Pyongyang's international airport.
At the meeting the next course of action to take against North Korea will be discussed. Rather than calling for fresh sanctions, ambassadors stressed the need for the earlier agreed-upon sanctions to be implemented immediately.
North Korea's latest missile test flew over the northern Japanese island of Hokkaidom travelling 3,700 km (2,300 miles) and landing in the Pacific Ocean.
