(7 Feb 2020) Some politically explosive bills are expected to come up at the 2020 Florida legislative session as it enters week five.
That includes a bill before the Senate Judiciary Committee that would force private employers to use a federal database called E-Verify to confirm the immigration status of workers.
Gov. Ron DeSantis has made the issue a priority, arguing that employers need to be sure that the people they hire aren't in Florida illegally.
Some key Republicans haven't been thrilled with it because the agriculture, tourism and construction industries think it's a bad idea.
Week 5 is the halfway point of the session, and it'll soon be crunch time. In fact, lawmakers are already crunching the numbers for a state budget.
The Senate wants to spend $92.8 billion. That's almost $1.5 billion more than what the governor is requesting.
The House is recommending slightly less than the governor's $91.4 billion spending plan.
Where all that money goes telegraphs what elected officials think are important.
