Florida Fossil Hunting Episode 16 | These dinosaur sized teeth are a fossil hunter's dream. It took me years of fossil hunting in Florida before I found my first one and now I feel like a natural history junkie constantly looking for the next great discovery. While most people associate Florida Fossil Hunting with finding Megalodon shark teeth, Mastodon teeth are one of the rarest and most impressive fossils to discover in Florida’s waterways! For every 100-200 Megalodon teeth found while shark tooth hunting or artifact hunting in Florida, only one Mastodon tooth is found intact. These teeth are also truly dinosaur sized with the larger one having a 7 inch long chewing surface (important to note that Florida’s rocks aren’t old enough to actually have dinosaur fossils). The Mastodon is closely related to Mammoths and Elephants and was the first species recognized as extinct by science. It also just so happens to be one of our all-time favorite extinct American mammals
